For several years now, one of the most hotly disputed issues in the sociology of ethnic

relations has been the degree to which Mexican-Americans are, or are not, assimilating to

the majority, or “Anglo,” culture and social structure. The classic assimilationalist model

for the relations between majority and minority was first established by Robert Park

(1950) and is often termed “straight-line assimilation.” This is the idea that minorities

experience a cycle in their relations with the majority, moving from conflict to accommodation

and eventually to complete assimilation. Ultimate assimilation means the

minority loses its original culture entirely and joins in the group life of the majority to the

point of invisibility. (That Park qualified this extreme view in some of his writings is

usually ignored). Many of the non-English white Europeans who entered the United States

in the 19th century seem to have followed the path of straight-line assimilation to what is called “Anglo conformity.” Gordon (1964) observed that there were various levels of

assimilation, both cultural and structural, and that ethnic groups might achieve a degree of

assimilation without necessarily disappearing into the majority.
