scalability.However,itisnotclearwhatpowerlevelsforallnodeswouldmakethesynchronizationprocessenergy-
efficient.Largepowerlevelsleadtofasterconvergencebut consumealotofenergyperroundofsynchronization.
Ontheotherhand,smallerpowersconsumelittleenergyperround,butconvergenceisveryslowrequiringalot
ofroundstoachievesynchronization.Inthispaperwelookattheproblemoffindingapowerassignmentthat
achievesglobalclocksynchronizationinthemostenergy-efficientmannerpossible.Welookattheproblemthrough
twodimensions;rateofconvergenceandenergyconsumedper roundofsynchronization.Acentralizedalgorithmis
presentedthatusesthepathcongestionoftheinducedcommunicationgraphtoestimatewhichpowerassignments
havegoodconvergencepropertiesandfindonethatminimizes thetotalenergytoachieveclocksynchronization.
Ourevaluationdemonstratesthatthepowerassignmentderivedfromthisalgorithmisveryenergy-efficientandis
applicableforwirelesscommunicationenvironmentswithvariousdistance-powergradients.Further,wepresenta
simpledistributedalgorithmwhichnodescanexecutelocallytoderiveenergy-efficientpowerlevelsforglobalclock
synchronization,andisespeciallyusefulinlarge-scaledeployments.
Clocksynchronizationiscriticaltomanysensornetworksforthesuccessoftheapplicationaswellasenergy
efficiency.Achievingaglobaltimeframethroughlocalized averagingofclockvaluesformultipleroundstillconver-
genceisapromisingapproachtoclocksynchronizationduetothedecentralizednatureofcomputationcoupledwith
scalability.However,itisnotclearwhatpowerlevelsforallnodeswouldmakethesynchronizationprocessenergy-
efficient.Largepowerlevelsleadtofasterconvergencebut consumealotofenergyperroundofsynchronization.
