Ray Perkins, head coach of the University of Alabama football team during the mid-

1980s is credited with the statement that his Alabama football team would never travel

to Auburn University - its fierce, in-state rival - to play a football game. On

December 3, 1989, Auburn defeated Alabama by a score of 30-20 before a sold-out

crowd at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium. This marked the first time that an Alabama

football team had ever played a game in Auburn. What follows is the story of how this

event occured.

The Alabama-Auburn series is one of college football’s most heated rivalries, dating

back to 1893. The decades of the 1960s and 1970s were decades of dominance by

Alabama in the series, and much of the credit for Alabama’s success was given to

coaching legend Paul “Bear” Bryant. Bryant’s arrival ushered in a period of multiple

National Championships for the University of Alabama, and Bryant’s teams dominated

Southeastern Conference football. He established a record for most career wins by a

college football coach. By Bryant’s last year, 1982, he had established an enormous

following throughout the state. So strong was his support that many predicted a landslide

victory for him in the next race for Governor. Although the extremely popular

Bryant did not pursue a career in politics, he had enough influence to prevent (through

contractual arrangements) the removal of the Alabama-Auburn series from its

“neutral” site of Birmingham, Alabama.
