Alternative Grounding Method Using Coconut Shell Charcoal as Media of Mesh Electrodes

The purpose of grounding electronic and electrical equipment is to provide as low as possible of impedance such that the current fault during the short circuit can be easily passed through to the earth. A mesh-structure of electrodes is commonly used in substations to increase the contact to the surrounding earth with lower ground resistances. It is aimed to produce a layer with small and even voltage gradient over the soil surface. This paper focuses on the mesh-electrode grounding system. The electrodes are made of 8-mm diameter of stainless steel, whereas the lattice dimension of the mesh is 50cmx50cm. Four variations of lattice number have been considered: 1-, 2-, and 4-lattice mesh structure. The structure was driven into the ground depth of 80-cm, being parallel to a surface of 20-cm thickness of grinded charcoal of coconut shells. The horizontal distance of each mesh-side to the surrounding earth wall was 10-cm. The influence of charcoal-layer thickness on the resulted grounding resistances has been investigated. Two soil conditions have been considered; dry soil and that with 50% of moisture content. Resistance measurements have been undertaken on each 10-cm layer addition upwards until the layers above the mesh-electrode reaching the surface level of earth. The ground field measurement results showed that each 10-cm charcoal-layer addition could lower the grounding resistance of the mesh-electrode system. The dry charcoal media produced the most effective decrease of resistance at the thickness of 60cm. The values of resistance obtained using 10cm thickness of charcoal layer in a mesh consisting of 1-, 2-, and 4-lattices are 268, 131, and 78 ohms consecutively. The addition of layer up to 80-cm resulted in a resistance decrease of 48%, 33%, and 44%. Using damp charcoal, the 10cm layer produced 26,5, 17,5, and 14,8ohms and a resistance decrease of 25%, 10%, and 3,6% subsequently for 1-, 2-, and 4-lattice mesh structure if the layer thickness became 80cm.
