This article examines the 350 women-only press conferences that Eleanor Roosevelt held


in the White House from 1933 to 1945. It argues that the conferences were not revolutionary


attempts at political communication by a first lady, contrary to what is often


written about them by scholars. Rather, they can be understood as a manifestation of class,


gender, and racial orientations that were acceptable to journalists and the public of that


era.


Issues of class, gender, and race permeated the Roosevelt administration, facts so


obvious today that they are almost overlooked. Franklin D. Roosevelt was viewed as a

“traitor to his class”—a political figure who refuted “the notion that wisdom and making


money were the same thing” (Wolfskill and Hudson, 1969). Both Franklin and Eleanor


Roosevelt, who was Franklin’s distant cousin and niece of President Theodore Roosevelt,


represented the upper class of the United States. Each came from monied families and


were at home on both sides of the Atlantic, and equally comfortable in their country


estates and New York City society.
