Recently, R. Dudley and Cruise (1990) have attempted also to provide a comprehensive

scale that would measure religious maturity. They agreed that openness to change and

complexity are important aspects of the religiously mature sentiment, but they believed

that the quest dimension fails to address questions about life commitment. Thus, a 58-item

instrument, the Personal Religion Inventory (PRI), was developed to capture the intent of

Allport’s (1952) mature religious sentiment.

The PRI includes 26 items, which are intended to measure Allport’s (1952) religiously

mature sentiment. Another 26 items were taken from Hoge’s (1972) extrinsic/intrinsic

scale, and six items from the Batson and Ventis (1982) quest scale were included (R.

Dudley and Cruise, 1990, p. 101).
