The scenario is well known: a nomadic lifestyle of hunting and gathering gives way

to a dramatic transformation involving permanent settlements, incipient farming

utilizing tools, draft animals, irrigation, and-the primary focus of this studya

completely new set of attitudes toward self, social life, the physical/natural

environment, and the cosmos. Such an abrupt transformation may presently be

described by scholars utilizing two parallel sources: (1) taking seriously the huntergatherers’lifestyle

through an examination of stories and songs dear to each culture;

and (2) looking back through the historical lens of a detached, observer-prose,

whose method is itself a product of the neolithic.

This “older way,” I will refer to as the hunter-gatherers’ mythos. Undertaking

a friendly hermeneutic of the myths of primal cultures yields a remarkable selfportrait

of each culture. Because primal peoples felt at home in their world-a

decisive orientation which invariably changes in the neolithic-their cultures may

be characterized as “embedded” ones. That is, through stories, songs, and visions,

we late 20th century “listeners” are able to “participate” in their world with them.

The mythographic literature has a distinguished record of scholars continuing from

the late 19th century to the present.3
