The tale of the future began the business of describing the shape of things-to-come in the second half of the eigh-
teenth century, when British and French writers took to this new form of fiction as the best means of presenting their
hopes, or their fears, in the tomorrows world of the imagination. By the 178Os, the first utopias and dystopias of the
future had appeared; and a succession of British and French writers had established the pattern for tales of the next
great war. The first major example of these new tales of the war-to-come was the anonymous The Reign of George VI (published in London, 1763). which devoted three-quarters of the narrative to a future British monarchs conquest of the French. Thereafter, tales of future wars appeared occasionally; but there were no spectacular developments before the world success of Chesneys The Battle of Dorking (187 1). A stream of future-war tales followed, and that grew to a flood in the 189Os, as British, French, German, and some American writers described the wars their coun- tries could be fighting in the near future. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the future-war story had been established throughout the major industrial countries, because it had become a major means of dealing with the con- sequences of contemporary social, political, and military problems.
