Old age played an important role in the lives of African American slaves. From
the beginning of the enslavement process, older Africans usually were not captured
for the slave trade. Slave dealers were most interested in selling younger robust
men and women, who were viewed as having more economic worth. Older peoples
relative worth was seen as lower than younger Africans with their full work-life
ahead of them. Bancroft noted, Young mothers with several small children were
extremely valuable, and buxom girls of 14 to 18 years were usually at a great
premium because of good looks or expected fecundity. Thus, ships logs of slaves
being shipped to America typically identify young but seldom older adults. In
addition, records show that older slaves were auctioned in markets at lower prices
than younger slaves. Genovese found that 50 year old slaves commanded no higher
value on the market than 8 year olds2
Some owners tried to hide the old age of their slaves to maximize earnings. Some
owners would doctor the appearance of their older slaves, feed them better, and
rest them in attempts to make them appear younger before taking them to slave
markets.2 Finally, numerous advertisements of the period made reference to the
ages of slaves that buyers were interested in acquiring. These ages typically ranged
from about 8 to between 25 to 30 years of age and excluded older African
Americans.
