Since the break between Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Roman Catholic) Christians

took place in the 1 lth century and the breakup of western Christianity in the 16th

century (known as the Protestant Reformation), the various Christian churches have

been alienated from each other with sporadic but unsuccessful attempts at rapprochement(

Desseaux, 1984).

The modern ecumenical movement began when representatives of various Protestant

denominations met in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1910 to discuss problems of

missionary work caused by denominational rivalry. The Orthodox later joined in this

discussion and the result from the seed planted in 1910 was creation of the World

Council of Churches (VanElderen, 1990), founded in 1948 in Amsterdam, representing

147 churches, mostly from Europe and North America. Since that Assembly, in

1948 over 300 churches from a hundred countries around the world have joined that

body, seeking unity among Christians (World Council of Churches, 1990).
