The pakeha (white New Zealander) rural colonial myth was perpetuated by, and for,

early European settlers of New Zealand. People migrated across the world for a way of

life that eluded them in industrial revolutionary Britain. Promises of a better way of

life in New Zealand, a chance to own one's own land, be one's own boss, and tame the

wilderness into productive land with the help of family labor, were the early bases of

the myth of rural way of life in New Zealand.

In The Myths We Live By, Samuel and Thompson explain that by identifying traditional

mythical elements in our own culture, we discover the power of myth as a force,

not only in history, but in shaping present lives: "we open up a history which pivots on the active relationship between the past and the present, subjective and objective,

poetic and political" (1990, p. 5).

In the case of the process of settling New Zealand, it was not just matter of newcomers

bringing with them a full set of appropriate social values. It was also a matter of

adapting to the new environment, and developing a national ideology that sustained

the new way of life, drawing from the values and mythologies from the British past

e.g., the rural idyll, the bourgeois Victorian family. 'Rural Arcadia' (an idyllic way of

life within nature) and 'familial Arcadia' in particular are options that still persist as

components of the 'great way of life'.
